WE STRIVE TO SEE THE WORLD FROM A KIDS-EYE-VIEW
Bellwoods Playschool uses a child-centred, socially conscious pedagogy to engage young children in social and artistic thought and action. Using what the city has to offer, we empower our students with the knowledge to be socially and environmentally responsible citizens while they develop into explorers of their urban landscape.

WE THINK OF THE CITY AS OUR CLASSROOM
A valuable aspect of the Bellwoods Playschool program is to empower children as navigators of their city. We journey on regular excursions, by foot and by public transportation, to art galleries, museums and cultural events, as well as markets, parks and city landmarks.

WE KNOW ITS TAKES A VILLAGE

Our Playschool runs on a model that links a range of artists together to engage and inspire children. We like to bring in different perspectives and actively pursue a diverse teaching staff. As such, professional educators and artists trade chalkboards for personal anecdotes and textbooks for real life experiences. Together, they create an atmosphere that is at once intellectually stimulating and deeply personalized.

Earth Day "Good to the Planet" Crew

Watching the train go 'round and 'round. Cool creation by Kim Adams at the AGO.

Our visit to the new local ol' time Candy Shoppe!! So many delicious treats from many different countries. Tasty AND educational!

EARTH DAY was April 22nd and we celebrated by talking about the many ways that we could love and be responsible for the Earth. We also talked about what the word 'Life' means and how it involves more than ourselves and our friends, but the ground, air and water, living creatures and plants around us too. There's a whole lot of life that needs our love and we're ready to serve it up!

Some of our ideas for being good friends to Earth and all living things were: Having more car free days -- Picking up litter -- Packing litter-less lunches -- Planting trees and flowers for the living creatures around us -- Turning off lights and running water -- Reusable bottles for water -- Having a garden -- Riding bicycles and scooters -- Having fun in parks --

Pretty amazing ideas from our little green friends in playgroup!

The group decided to help out on Earth Day by picking up litter out front of Dewson. We suited up with plastic gloves that would protect our hands from germs on the garbage. It was hard to decide on a name for our little crew of cleaners. "Good to the Planet" and"Balloon Hands"are what we decided upon.

The kids took note of what kind of litter there was around the school... candy wrappers, chocolate bar wrappers and boxes and plastic bags were the most popular.

We also made pinecone bird feeders to hang in our yards. We used the pinecones we collected last time we were in high park. It was fun turning them into feeders that could go back into the trees for the birds (or squirrels!) to enjoy!

Collaborative Creatures with Leah Gold!

Leah Gold (Bellwoods Playschool co-founder/superwoman extraordinaire) took us on a tour of her studio and then suited us up for some fun times with inks!

We love Leah's artwork! Please check out her website here: http://leahgoldart.blogspot.com/

Patterns are everywhere! We loved the fine details and circular patterns in this beautiful horse.
The process begins...

 Brilliant colours and patterns!!!

A creature is born!!!

Leah cut out the different shapes and patterns from our ink drawings and shuffled the beautiful pieces around like a puzzle until it all came together and a new creature was born!! We love looking to see what parts of the creature our drawings created.
Our creature will soon have a new friend to keep him/her/it company! The rest of the playschool friends are set to visit Leah and make a friend for this colourful creature!

Can't take my eyes off of you, you're just too good to be true!
